First printing means the first print run of any edition. Sometimes an edition will go into several print runs. Which brings us to those little numbers or letters on the copyright page. Some publishers use letters; some use numbers. They indicate the number of anticipated print runs as well as the actual print run of the volume in question. If the numbers are 7 5 3 2 4 6, this would be a second printing. In other words the lowest letter or number indicates which printing you are holding.
Unfortunately, this is not an absolute, and some publishers handle it differently.
