September 28, 2007, Newsletter Issue #173: When I Lived in Modern Times

Tip of the Week

Linda Grant recently took home the Orange Prize for her novel "When I Lived in Modern Times." The book jacket describes it as the story of Evelyn Sert, who "journeys to Tel Aviv, where Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany are determined to forge a modern consciousness in the heart of the Middle East. Against this background, her story weaves together national identity, terrorism, love and the art of hairdressing."

The Orange Prize is a British literary award given yearly to a female author (and was established to offset what many felt was the male-dominated shortlists of the Booker Prize)

"When I Lived in Modern Times" is not yet available in an American edition for American readers, but you can purchase the book online from BOL.com, a sponsor of the Orange Prize Web site.
