Viking Press is an American publishing company owned by Penguin Books. It was founded in New York City in 1925 by Harold K. Guinzburg and George S. Oppenheim. They chose the original Viking ship logo as a symbol of enterprise, adventure and exploration, and their founding creed stated that the goal was to publish "a strictly limited list of good nonfiction ...with some claim to permanent importance rather than ephemeral popular interest." Over the years, authors at Viking Press have won five Nobel Prizes for Literature, and one Nobel Peace Prize, among the dozens of prizes and awards claimed.
Authors that have been published through Viking Press include John Steinbeck, James Joyce, Saul Bellow (one of the Nobel Prize for Literature winners), Jack Kerouac, and J.M. Coetzee.
